Because in many instances they are stupid feckless young single parents who have no ambition for their kids or experience of life. Single parent hood used to be frowned upon, now, thanks to middleclass socialists and lefties taking over social services, it is virtually encouraged, with a range of freebies and benefits. Indeed these stupid young girls would be even more stupid not to take the government up on their generous offer of free houses and a weekly handout.

Kids need parents who have a least half a brain, parents who will teach their kids right from wrong. Parents who know where they are going in life and have ambitions to see their kids do better than they have. Kids need fathers to teach them the value of respect and honour, and yes, to lay down the law when necessary. The feral kids who are causing all the current problems have none of this. What's needed is not more police, but a total overhaul of social policy and the removal of those who are standing in the way of it. Why did we behave (comparatively speaking) ourselves back in the 60's and 70's? Why do kids in other rich countries seem to behave themselves?
I agree with 90% of what you say. A stable environment for kids is essential to stable adults. I don't agree that it's all the fault of middle-class 'luvvies' though. If you're a decent, intelligent, caring mother, then it doesn't matter if you're single and claiming benefit or not. Chances are your kids will turn out just fine. These morons roaming the streets are kids left to their own devices way too long. Uncaring parents more interested in Eastenders than preparing tea and making sure the kids' homework is done. More interested in buying the kids a Playstation 2 to keep them off their backs, rather than talking about their worries and fears.

I think these parents are lazy, uncaring individuals with no ambition and hope, not because they want to be, but because it's their nature to be. I think it's because they grew up in a 'winner takes all' society, where the losers are left on the slag heap. I think they grew up at school thinking that life didn't have much to offer them unless they became an overnight success. I think they felt like they were going to fail and just let life pass them by. I think these people are still doing it, and passing it on to their own kids, like a virus. (or a 'meme' as is the recent recognised term).

You're right in that society does need an overhaul. Your right in that a stable family envirnment is better than single parenthood, but I just feel your wrong in blaming it solely on social workers and Guardian readers.

Must mention this...we had a new Asian supermarket open near us last year. The yobs thought this was easy pickings for a few fun & games.
One thing they didn't realise was,a telephone call from behind the counter and within five minutes,2 car loads of the 'heavy mob' arrived.

And I mean, the Asian heavy's,big blokes the size of brick shit-houses,possibly the owners,or minders, you wouldn't want to meet on a dark night.

Since then, they, the yobs, keep well away from hanging around the shop in fear this might happen again. The shop is well frequented and spotless. And abides by the rules of opening and closing at night.

All in agreement with the local neighbours and council.

Children are welcome, but only a few at a time. It's become very popular with grown-ups and respected.

Yobs beware of gentlemen in dark shades.

What happened to gary newlove does not seem to have changed a lot in the area where he lived,on north west news tonight there has been a similar incident in the same area apparently some bloke accosted a kid who had caused some damage and the kid told him that he would be dead within a week, probably bravado but the mentality has not changed.

I blame [unwittingly] Thatcher.

By encouraging wideboys, presentation over substance, flash the cash, buy your house at all costs even if it means you spend no time disciplining your kids, etc etc., kids think they have to be 'ard, tough, The King Of Their Estate and show no mercy.

I can well believe that her goal was the opposite- a more Christian, disciplined and stable Britain. But the opposite has been the outcome.

Quit right, Prof. I have similar pals and associates to the Asian heavy mob you allude to. Last year some druggie retard sumbags off the estate robbed their off license and got away with a load of Bensons (cigarettes). Big mistake, my pals are respected 'businessmen' in both the Asian and white communities which they serve. They found out who'd done it and took steps to see that the perpetrators were 'dealt with' - after which they were advised to get out of town.

When dealing with malevolent dimwits and flakes it's no use talking to them in the impatient condescending tones of a middleclass social worker. It simply goes over their heads. When you are dealing with retards you must address them in a language with which they are fully conversant if you are going to make your point.
