We also had the Commonwealth and others---including the French---to thank. Look at the nationalities of the pilots that took part in the Battle of Britain, for example.

NO and Yes just like everyone else is around the world unfortunately.
In fact having just come back from a tour of Normandy it could be argued that the French give more of a fuck about us, and in particular our War dead, than the British do.
The kids, judging by the huge numbers I witnessed ask a veteran for his autograph in favour of a movie star who was stood just a few feet away from him, also appear to have a damn sight more respect for the elderly than some of the trolls who live over here, who think defacing a war memorial is just something which can be done for fun.

Actually, randyandy is spot on here. The war graves in France and Belgium are immaculate, absolutely immaculate. The respect the French show for the dead, including some unfortunate German troops is second to none.
The War Memorials stand proud in this country, unlike our shoddy and shabby relics that councils would much rather have removed
