Cancellation fees - what do you think?

i've never cancelled a shoot and never had a no show, had a few cancels this year. I state now in an email if i get no txt by 9.30 then i'll look for replacement.

Knowing what I do about one of your lost shoots last week, and the person involved, Sarah, I fully commiserate with you. Had I been nearer I'd have offered the old Handiwork shoulder to cry on, and a stiff drink as well of course.

Valid points raised however I suspect there's more togs been let down by no show models than the other way round or dropped for better paid jobs etc, do the models concerned reimburse those togs for their lost revenue?

Part of the problem with this country is the big reticence to follow an agency system. Girls wants all the money and producers don't want to pay commission either. Yet when both sides add up all the lost work over a year I suspect most pros actually end up with less money due to lost work than you would have done if you would have used a reputable agency. If an agency was used by the majority and payments for bookings were paid in advance in an escrow way, models who are cancelled on receive their money and the other way round, the agency would provide a replacement at short notice (or reschedule if applicable) then surely there wouldn't be these problems as often.

I am an amateur photographer but I have never cancelled a confirmed shoot.

I have had mutually agreed tentative bookings for an outdoor shoot subject to suitable weather and on last occasion I offered to take the risk of the shoot but the model decided better to wait for a better day.

However there are two occasions when I have booked a day as holiday from work for a shoot only for the model to cancel by text, once mid-afternoon the previous day but once during the night so I get the message when I turn my phone on the morning of the shoot.
Hence both times a wasted day so effectively a day's wages out of pocket.

I will only book a model if they can work from home although I am now only really interested in outdoor shoots.
I would never book a studio for a shoot so I can not have them to pay for a no show.

Once a model asked for a deposit and I would have no issues paying a deposit again to show I am genuine.
However if I asked a model for a deposit would they pay or simply decline my booking? I guess the latter.
