wasn't suggesting for a minute that genesis were any good, not my cuppa at all, but purely as an example as to what i reckon queen should have done. in all honesty they shouldn't bother at all, they can't be skint and, now that the live aid dvd has been released, you can see that, with freddie, they were unrivalled even in the most illustrious company

very true, I went to see whitesnake in concert last year, David Coverdale was the only original member of the band but it is his vocal talent that made whitesnake what they were/are. By the looks of his band they were all young enough to be his kids as Mr coverdale is now in his 50's but boy can he still sing! Bands have successfully changed vocalists for one reason or another and still been succesful here are a couple of examples:
Iron maiden replaced Paul d'ianno with bruce dickinson and became more succesful
AC/DC brought in Brian Johnson after the death of Bon Scott and became more succesful
Black Sabbath replaced Ozzy with Ronnie James Dio and then Ian Gillan and all were succesful
Rainbow replaced Ronnie James Dio with Graham Bonnett and had huge hits.
I could go on but you are probably bored already.
I really do not think that you could replace Freddie Mercury though, he was pretty unique!
