Cate has a good point- far too many johnny foreigners here who dont grow up here USING our roads, and drive like they might to back home! Im sure the roads in Albania are superb but, we got ALOT more traffic here...And i cant even speak German, so just as well we won 2-0!

This is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, i.e. describing a potential loss of WW2 through the phrase "we would all be speaking German now". Thing is: there were a lot of things extremely nasty about the Nazis, really too many to mention. My view is: if being forced to learn a foreign language is the worst consequence (of losing WW2) you can think of, then you really are a Nazi yourself - because by implication you degrade genocide and loss of freedom and justice to a trivial matter.

I know this phrase is used metaphorically here, and probably was so in its original form. But I have heard it plenty of times when I had the distinct impression that people meant it literally.

They're entitled to benefits. If they weren't entitled the benefits wouldn't be payable. The background to that entitlement isn't important .. you make a claim, the claim is assessed and if you're entitled the allowances are paid. As far as I know qualifications and IQ aren't assessed so whether you're a genius or a dunce if you're entitled you're entitled.
