Re: A bit of information for ya all
Ah, the age old ploy. Ignore the information in someone's post completely and come up with a different figure about something completely different.
So there has been an increase in gun crime. That could be entirely consistent with a fall in crime and in the homicide rate, couldn't it? In fact there was a fall in the homicide rate in 2010 compared to 2000, for example.
"I live in a provincial town and 4 people have been shot dead here in the last year with many other incidents all drug/gang related, its things like this that make people feel society is breaking down, you don't need to be directly affected."
That is my point about the non-stop reporting of crime on news channels. THe fear of crime completely outweighs the actual risks of crime particularly in the area of murder.
Cheers

Max
Max,
If you are going to be scared of crime, you will be scared of crime. If you want to go on about how safe London was decades ago, that is entirely your prerogative. All I am saying is that statistically your chance of being attacked and killed in London is largely unchanged in the last 30 years.
If you decided to move anywhere in England and Wales, your chances of being killed are not much higher, taking into account the population increases, than they were 50 years ago.
Finally, the overwhelming increase in the amount of coverage on crime in our 24 hr media compared to the 1960's is beyond question. There must be a 1000 times as much television hours available now as there was then. What is it filled up with? A lot of crime in many cases.

Strangely David I am as concerned about other people being murdered as myself, go figure, its not about the risk to self as much as society, strange as a socialist you see this as only relevant if crime affects you.
"Ah, the age old ploy. Ignore the information in someone's post completely and come up with a different figure about something completely different."
Your figures speak for themselves, the murder rate has more than doubled, and that is the convicted murder rate, what is the rate of deaths unsolved? Of the 4 people shot I mentioned in my town nobody has been arrested for 2 of the crimes, so are they on the 'murder' figures? Are cases which collapse at trial due to witness intimidation etc included? Would not have thought so.

Right so we have moved off gun crime figures and we are back on murder again, are we? Your paragraph above is extremely stupid. I have already stated once earlier in this thread that
"Now every violent death is a tragedy obviously, particularly for friends and family."
There is absolutely nothing in that paragraph that is substantiated by what I have stated earlier in this thread. Feel free to apologise in your own time, if you are man or woman enough. Judging from your meandering posts, I suspect you are not.
Then you state
"the murder rate has more than doubled," I repeat that is comparing the 60's with 2000. The murder rate dropped to about 600 or so in 2010 and the population has gone up 50% during that time.
Cheers

Why you have spent half the thread explaining nobody really needs to worry about increasing murder rates because its statistically unlikely to happen to you personally, I stand by my point that this is a very odd and selfish viewpoint to take.

Are you drunk?
The UK populatiun in 1960 was 52.3 million, its now 59.9 million

I would have thought that it stands to reason that if you import people from places like Somalia to the UK, then the UK will get just that bit more like Somalia. That's what happened when PC Sharon Beshenivski was murdered by Somali robbers with Kalashnikovs, an everyday event in Mogadishu, brought to Yorkshire by our multicultural establishment. Pardon me whilst I celebrate diversity.

First, the murder rate in 2010 is down compared to 2000, so the argument about increasing murder rates is dependent on which selection of dates you take, but to repeat my understanding is that the murder rate in London hasnt really changed much in 30 years.
Secondly worrying about being murdered is no more effective than worrying about being struck by lightning. Taking measures to decrease murders is something I obviously support and nothing in this thread that I have said suggests otherwise.
On the subject of population, for example if you have a look at the graph here
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/ ... lation.pdf
you will see that the population of England in 1960 was about 40 million. the population estimates that I have seen for 2011 suggest that it could be as much as 55 million given that England's population makes up the vast amount of UK pop. And that doesnt include all the illegals that some people on this forum keep banging on about.
I have spent enough time on you now. In future if I see one of your posts which shows at least some intelligence and an ability to follow and understand points then I will respond to you. If not, I can't be arsed.
Cheers and enjoy your drinking.

Sorry I should have realised that the population statistics I needed to consult were locked in the vaults of your vivid imagination.

You do make me laugh! This from someone who doesnt include a single link to back up their information and then criticises me for not doing it.
First my boy, here's a graph for you
http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article21565.html
Now given that you dont even seem to be able to get threads working properly I will interprete it for you. The estimate for UK population is about 62.5 million. Got that!
Now read this and look at the demographic section
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England#Demographics
It states that England represents about 85% of UK population. That's about 53 -54 million without taking into account illegal immigration.
There I have really over-indulged you so that is it in terms of my replies to you on this thread.
You could always carry on your discussion about Chernobyl death figures with Sam Slater?
Cheers
