With DVD players currently selling from ?40 upwards I can't see VHS lasting much longer.
I reckon most places will ditch VHS after xmas, once everyone has been given or has brought themself a DVD player.

The manual for my SONY SLV-810G is pretty straight-forward, perhaps you have a different make or model.

Get yourself a dual VCR/DVD player
but make sure its Region Free and plays PAL and NTSC
Video has had its day but there are still bargains to be had as distributors try to clear out old stock while moving over to DVD
cheers
