Blu-Ray vs DVD

Post by Zorro »

There was a lot of talk about Blu-Ray taking over the DVD market place, and for a while a few years ago we saw a very strong growth in Blu-Ray sales, but now it appears to have completely dropped off, studios not producing as many and customers not buying as many.

What do you guys think, has Blu-Ray died a death?

Would you buy a Blu-Ray version of a title over a normal version if prices were the same?

Just curious

I've never seen porn on blu-ray - i suppose it exists in america in limited quantities. Personally no, i wouldn't but that might be because i haven't got a blu-ray player and i've no intention of getting one. I hope blu-ray has died a death because it may stop the endless 'you thought you had it in the best version but look at this it's one millionth of a percent better so spend ?x and then in five years we'll find something else'. This is why it amazes me that record companies now tout the lossy compressed mp3 over the previously all conquering cd - the only reason being there is less outlay for them.

With HD TV and films in HD via Virgin, Sky etc I don't think the demand for Blu-ray will increase.

I don't regularly buy films but if I did and the titles I wanted were available on Blu-ray at the same price as DVD I would probably get a Blu-ray player. Players aren't that expensive but recorders and blank discs are much more expensive than DVD.

As to adult content the current trend seems to be away from DVD to downloads.

You have to remember that most Blu-ray players will upscale normal DVDs hence improving the quality for the viewer. So, it would make sense that the limited adult DVD market would stay with DVDs for the present. And, of course, downloading MP4s on to your HD is more convenient for privacy issues (The missus and kids and the like) and the one-handed brigade. Cough, cough! LOL

If there is a film that I specifically want to watch or keep, then I would buy a Blu-ray disc of said product. Whilst I have SKY HD+, I still enjoy watching a specific film on Blu-ray simply because broadcasters like Sky bastardise the sound and viewing quality so that they can transmit it in the first place.

A lot of the amateurs send their stuff out on HD wmv, HD mpeg4 or HD MKV as media players are far cheaper than Blu Ray players & the media can still be made & watched in 720p / 1080p without the expense of Blu Ray burners & high costing disc's.

As amateur is far popular whatever media they use will catch on as they want to give customers the quality without ripping them off, Blu Ray even though a good media is far to expensive to win the race as disc's will fade be just a memory by the end of this decade.

I had a conversation with 2 of the big U.S. producers at the Venus Fair in
Berlin just two days ago....they both thought that in the U.S market blu-ray
was a dead duck for porn (mainly because of price). They felt that dvds
will continue at about one-third the size of the market at its height. Both
said the market for dvds seems to have stabilised at this level. Both felt
that 3D porn might still take off in the States.
