I'm fairly new to this forum, so if this point has come up or was made prior, you know the drill.

It seems Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack has seen his child pornography case dropped due to insubstantial evidence. Presumably this means none at all. Much was made of the arrest made by officers working on Operation Ore, the connection implicit, but cannily never stated. Damage is done, of course, and rumours abound. One of which is that Del Naja was taken in after someone had overheard him discussing child porn, in a wholly reasonable context, in the back room of a nightclub.

Mind what you're saying, eh.

not disimilar to the manner in which the pete townshend case was handled - or, rather, mishandled.

townshend's treatment was a disgrace. a classic case of trial by media and the met's love of parading a prize 'catch' - irrespective of the damage such actions cause the individual concerned (whatever the outcome of any ensuing investigation).

i hope we get to hear del naja's side of the story, sooner rather than later. 'innocent until proven guilty' is one of our most fundamental potections and it would be tragic to see it effectively undermined by the combined, self serving shenanigans of the police and media.

Indeed. But wait....horror!....Townshend made an admittance to actually looking at child porn, which gave the Sunday Times a good excuse to drag out a decade-old photo of him standing next to Gary Glitter at a function. Well, who'd have thought...

We know that the police rely on the papers for good image, and press rely on them for headlines. No doubt child porn/paedophiles will be grist to the likes of Rebekah Wades' dark, satanic mills for quite some time (or until some other social-moral outrage comes to the fore - and its difficult to think of one that would concern the likes of her so much).

What Towshend and Del Naja show us, and particularly in their treatment, is that the police are fighting a losing battle against the true villians. The FBI list on which Operation Ore is based on, though extensive, will still have a limited lifespan. The original american operation it stems from was something of a fluke too, apparently, as was the much-touted e-group Candyman affair ('send pics to join' - they'll never pull that one off again). Add to this the limited officers involved, the lack of calender space, and the time needed to check hard-drives after an arrest (not to mention their destruction/replacement by those who know they might be collared) and you've got a somewhat desperate situation for all involved. As the internet becomes more and more prominent in both our lives and as part of the media, the press (where internet envy is starting to emerge) will want more results. They've also created a situation where no-one's willing to report child porn, for fear of collaring themselves.

Yes, new advanced tracking equipment is employed, which could reap quicker results and newer suspects. But in the vast bowels of cyberspace it may not cut much mustard. So why not cut to the chase?. One big flash arrest of some poor innocent bastard should tell all the nonces to ditch their kiddyscud, shouldn't it? - because chasing them up isn't actually on the cards at present, is it.

And who's next?

As I mentioned, Operation Ore stems from a previous FBI operation, and they will have wanted all possible suspects investigated on this side of the pond, regardless of what position they hold. And for the police themselves, it's far better to rout out the bad apples than attempt any sort of cover-up. After all, the press rely on them for headlines, and that'd be a real cracker if it got out, wouldn't it.
