US Foreign Policy

Post by mart »

Watched the John Pilger TV programme about the new imperialism on NZ TV last night. I assume its been on UK TV.
For me, the most telling part was at the very end when JP shows the senior State Dept. guy (who thinks filming has finished) asking him, sarcastically, "You must be a member of the Labour Party" and when Pilger points out that the Labour Party supports the US intervention, then makes it Communist Party. It beggars belief that US foreign Policy is in the hands of such political ignoramuses.
Correction: one shouldn't be surprised by anything about a nation that manages to elect a President like Dubya.
I could go on at length but one other news item amazed me recently. Apparently the US is putting all Iraq business (except oil) up for sale. That didn't happen even to Germany and Japan after the end of WWII.

Last week, the British forces in Basra announced that the area was now mostly secure and they could now start (repeat "start") the work of restoring the water and power supplies and so on. Once hostilities ceased, the main aim should have been getting the civilian population behind the allies by restoring the country to order as soon as possible.

The war had two major goals, according to its advocates: disposing of Saddam Hussein (well, nearly) and "liberating the Iraqi people." That liberation seems a long way off as the US and us, as their obedient poodles, continue to cock a snoot at the United Nations.

The US denied, before hostilities started, that this conflict was about oil. Given how tightly they are holding on to power in Iraq, and how reluctant they are to give the international community a say in the running of the country, that looks like a steaming pile of crap.

I'm beginning to think that Bush has a video of Blair shagging the Queen, or eating some child, or something that keeps him on-side when it's apparent the only remaining objective of action in Iraq is to get Dubya re-elected.

As for the ignorance of the State Department towards European politics, I'm surprised you're surprised, Mart.

Lets hope that George W Bush don't get re-elected otherwise he may start aiming his 'smarter' bombs at us after Novermber, as I don't think he will get a warm reception when he visits the UK.

Lets hope for a Bush/Paxman debate on ethical foreign policy...it could be entertaining.

No chance of that debate, PHP---blood sports aren't flavour of the month in this country. Let's be honest, Bush would lose a battle of wits with Jordan (the airhead, not ehe kingdom) and Beckham.

Germany & Japan were allowed to rebuild their own counrty after WW2, unlike Iraq. Iraq has been left as some sort of vacum.

Some said that the US would stay so that they could have a base in the area in which to attack Iraq & them of that ilk should they stray out of line.

There is some thinking that both US & Britsh forces will be still there in about 5 years time unlike Bush & Blair who may both be out of power by then.

They'd better be out by this time next year or things will get worse. If anything is likely to unite Islamic nations in some sort of jihad it's the continued occupation of Iraq until McDonald's and Starbucks have set up branches.

Please God let it happen. Nah, God is on Dubya's side.
Seriously though folks, letting Paxo loose on him would really show how little they know about the rest of the world....in more ways than one.
