Came across this quote:
"If I had been around when Rubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? Well, she would have been the paintbrush." ~Dawn French
Fair point. In the court of Catherine de Medici, the ladies in waiting were "required" to follow the fashion of the time---ie a ridiculously narrow waist. In fact she designed a corset that narrowed the waist to 13 inches!
Why does "fashion" hold such a strong grip on people's lives? Call me a slob, but I'd rather be comfortable than suffer for the sake of looking good.

I've been thinking along similar lines myself recently. How long has the gym/aerobics/etc. fad been around? Are the girls more "fit" nowadays?
I still lust after the likes of Donna Murray, Millie Minchen, Lisa Phillips et al.

Nothing new under the Sun: in quattrocento Italy, womens' platform shoes were so high that servants were employed to steady the wearers as they hobbled precariously down the street.
Similarly, the present vogue for extremely pointed toes reflects the somewhat earlier Italian habit of ridiculously long boot-tips (the bigger, the richer, more powerful and virile you were supposed to be) amongst 13th c. young bloods. They ended up so long that fine (usually gold) chains were attached to link the tips to a belt around the waist or shoulders.

Re: Fashion/fads/perspective
They just want to stand out from the crowd-its all mental
We might all be thinking that this is a Womans problem-its not-(fashion aside)
The advertising gurus having wrung the womans side dry are aiming squarely at the young men of today-hence the new term metro-sexual
The push to make men start using skin care products is going down the
same path.
Thank god I' over that I've got to look my best so to attract the opposite sex.
I must be wise or deluded?
cheers

Perhaps you've just given up trying to be attractive to women?

Re: Fashion/fads/perspective
I wouldn't go that far that would very vain of me
All I'm saying is that to become obsessed with trying to look PERFECT isn't healthy which is what all these hyped up roducts promise in short.
Nothing wrong with wanting to be attractive but there are far more important facets than looks that seem to get passed by
Everything in moderation as I keep saying
cheers

I have heard, however, that the latest fashion accessory, your own water buffalo, is a proven fanny magnet.

Stands to reason
I used to walk the neighbours dog for this very reason.
came to the conclusion that the women thought I was a caring human being because of it or some such malarkey
Amazing results without any of the baggage associated with pet care
cheers
