This will please Bimmercat, it's Michael Moore's latest book.
From a review in the Guardian; "(That said, Bush's America can sometimes be so daft that that cartoonish incomprehension is the only possible response - what kind of democracy allows the monitoring of public library records as part of a crackdown on terrorism, but not gun purchase records, lest the law-abidin', gun-totin' Americans feel their liberties have been compromised?)"

Dude, Where's My Country?
Re: Dude, Where's My Country?
I'm sure it would be more convenient for certain sections of US society for Moore and his allies to be "on the outside, pissing in", as it were.........I'm not that often in agreement with him, but we share a similar attitude on firearms.
What I think astonishes the average Brit is the apparent incompatibility of a Freedom-loving (as long as it's American freedom) US that has the highest gun-ownership in the world and the second-highest capital punishment figures after good ole democratic China.
As I understand it, the idea of the 2nd Amendment dates back to the days when there was a requirement for a standing citizen army to defend the country against us ravaging Brits, and was never intended to be some carte blanche for everyone to own a small-sized arms dump.
The answer to gun crime is to tightly control gun-ownership, not to have even more guns.

Re: ...for every action...
You can be anti-Dubya without being anti-American: by belonging to the Democrats, for example.
Just as you can agree in part or whole with Moore without being anti-American.

Re: Dude, Where's My Country?
The Dunblane situation is a good example. Columbine had guards in the school, and it seems to have been part of the culture that guns will get into school. Here, we are talking about an infants class in a primary school in a small Scottish town that barely registered on its own country's geographical radar (it was somewhere you passed through heading westwards towards Stirling and Glasgow, or eastwards towards Perth and points further on.
Hamilton was a gun nut. The inquiry into the tragedy heard that two officers who called at his house to check whether he should be allowed to keep his gun licence were unhappy about him, and put it in their report. Sadly, his application was rubberstamped by those further up the chain of command (there are some conspiracy theorists up here who claim a Masonic and child abuse link regarding the police force, the judiciary and local MPs; highly unlikely in my view, but Hamilton had friends somewhere) and so he had the ammo and weaponry to do damage when he felt he needed to.
This was one sick man. And he owned guns. And when the guns are there, so is the temptation to use them---especially if you think the world is against you. All those children, and their teacher, butchered because of one gun nut. I heard the argument too soon afterwards, from a gun club member (natch), that if a golfer had taken a seven iron into school and started clubbing children that no one would be calling on a ban on golf. But then a golf club isn't the weapon of choice for your average psycho.
The US law regarding gun ownership is 200 years old. At that stage in history, people were still being executed for stealing bread in some countries. But their laws have evolved. Why can't yours?

Well Bimmercat, getting you going on your illiberal rant is like shooting fish in a barrel.
If you read my post carefully you will note that I am quoting from a newspaper review not directly from Michael Moore. I have no idea whether or not he makes that statement but if its true then God help America.
You clearly are suffering from extreme paranoia about Communism and left wing conspiracies. Have you considered seeking professional advice?

Re: Dude, Where's My Country?
Not sure that Bimmercat's suffering "from extreme paranoia", he just sounds like an American who's mightily pissed off with people attacking his country. The USA will always get stick as the world's only 'superpower' but is merry old England such a great place to live?
I don't agree with everything that Bimmercat says, but a lot of his points are worth listening to. Enjoyable though his books and films are, Michael Moore's rants are all a bit too simplistic and easy to be seriously considered.
