Mozzarella evolved out of the primordial slime about 4 billion years ago, which explains its rubber-like consistency, horrible milky yeloow colour, extreme stretchiness and extraordinary tenacity when clinging to teeth/carpets/slippers/small children etc (from the ancient habit of attaching itself to rocks). All that stuff about buffaloes is just a smokescreen.........they actually harvest it from Lake Como, and the cattle are just used to hide the machinery behind.
The Italians are well-known for claiming to have invented everything, mostly by Da Vinci, Pavarotti and Galileo, but in this case it ain't true.
There is another theory that the helicopter, submarine and double-entry bookkeeping were invented by Sophia Loren, but I for one don't believe it.
