Whatever happened to Martin? The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, Roxanne, all superb---then he got to the stage where he couldn't be funny if he tried (and my God did he try). Could say the same for Chevy Chase.

I think you'll find Martin's career has caught a second wind on the printed page. Pure Drivel (very amusing musings), and his two novels, Shopgirl and The Pleasure Of My Own Company, are all vastly superior, and far funnier, than any of his recent celluloid outings. Ironic as ever, Shopgirl has just been filmed, starring Martin and (minor swoon) Claire Danes.
