If anyones watching Kez at the moment, thats where I live! It was filmed in and around Hoyland, and It hasn't changed that much since. Thats my local chippy he goes into, and the chipping machine (the thing at the back with the grill on) was still in use until about a year ago.

Barry Hines, the writer, used to be a teacher at my school, and anyone who ever had a sports lesson with Mr Hallam, will know exactly where he got the inspireation for the Brian Glover character.

never tire of watching this film. Brian Glover was a very underestimated actor.

Lucky you. Grew up reading his stuff, and it's a shame his reputation rests on just one novel, as The Gamekeeper, The Price of Coal, Looks and Smiles, and The Blinder are all cut from the same cloth as A kestrel for a Knave. A proper working class hero in my book.

Gamekeeper, Coal and Looks...... all recruited kids from my school to take small parts in them. One of them, who played the son of bobby Knutt in the Price of Coal, is now playing guitar in the reformed Saxon.

Must admit, I had a tear of nostalgia, from the sight of the winding gear and muck stacks, they seemed such better days.

I don't miss the PE lessons that were *exactly* like that though.

And yes, before anyone asks, I do talk like that.

A bloody great film it has to be said, although of course it is spelled ?Kes?, they do not make them like that now I am afraid, but according to this bio for the writer Barry Hines the resultant film could have been completely different:
?On grounds of artistic integrity, he bravely turned down an offer from Disney for the film rights of 'Kes'. They wanted to change the fate of the kestrel and give the film a traditional Disney-type ending. His decision ensured he would miss out on a financially lucrative deal and possibly further work for them. When he told his father of his decision, he replied, "Next time lad, don't be s'bloody proud!"
A brave man indeed but we are much better off for his decision.
