Shaun of the dead

Post by Terry May »

This is the new British comedy from the star & director of SPACED. Billed as a romantic zombie comedy!

STORY
An electrical shop assistant and his layabout housemate fend off a zombie invasion.

PROS
- very funny in places
- quirky direction
- good make up effects

CONS
- not enough scares

VERDICT
A British zombie movie a la George Romero - must be a first! This treads the difficult path between comedy and horror similar to 'An American Werewolf in London' and my only real complaint is that although it is very funny in places the real scares are few and far between and I would like to have been really terrified. It does borrow shots from George Romero films rather heavily too although this doesn't affect your enjoyment of it at all. Apart from the script being funny it's clever too in that there are verbal comments and thematic riffs which you would only pick up on with a second viewing and this certainly could be watched a second time. The emphasis is probably more on comedy than on horror - despite there being some bloody moments. The usual gory demise that characters meet is not as extreme as you might be used to although one character does have a spectacular and stomach churning (literally) end. All in all this was a very entertaining night out and shouldn't disappoint.

Because he gets pirate DVD's the same as everyone else.
Other times, he just read lots of reviews and makes up a new one.
I knew he was lying when he said "George & Zippy do a wonderful turn in Starsky & Hutch."
