Julian and Sandy

Post by DavidS »

In the 1960's BBC radio comedy series, 'Round the Horne' with Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick played two homosexual bookshop keepers, Julian & Sandy. Except those people who cannot find anything comic in sex, most people found their weekly routine very funny. It now turns out that the sketch contained a whole series of slang messages which only members of the gay community would have understood at the time. Homosexuality was still illegal then. Can anyone assist regarding what these messages were.

Also worth checking out is Ken Williams "Rambling Sid Rumpo"

folk music full of gay slang , that was very popular !

with songs like "How green my naggers grow" and "the Cod wangler" !!!

Thanks Steve56, I'd forgotten about The Kinks. Many of their songs were considered to carry hidden meanings, paticularly Lola. I just thought their songs made rather a nice noise and still do!

I do recall Beyond our Ken, but I was a bit too young to appreciate it at the time. I was reminded of Round the Horne recently when someone remarked how good it was compared with the vastly overrated Goon Show. Your recommended website is very useful. Thank you.
