"Clear!"
Does this forum need the defibrilator treatment? Where's everyone gone? Okay, there was a lot of crap talked about here (quite a bit by myself, I confess), but there was always a number of threads kicking up. The last week, very few. I realise a few of the usual suspects have gone AWOL (I have a theory that there are huge empty pods outside the homes of JJ, Elton, Lizard et al and their friends and relatives are marvelling at how they've changed in the last few weeks), and Steve56 isn't posting as regularly as he used to, but this gives the long-time browsers/lurkers a chance to ease themselves in to group and put forward their views on life, the universe and everything.

Caractacus,
Good point. As I've mentioned before, I don't usually post much if I'm not that interested or think I have something relevant or useful to add. Which is quite often, I'm afraid. And I must be the champion poster of stuff that is no doubt mind-numbingly dull for most people on this forum. History, Classical music, old films, publicly hanging Michael Jackson and Richard Madeley ?. ...ZZzzzzzzzzzz.
But you only have to look at the titles of the recent threads to see that it's hardly brain fodder. In the last few months there have been great threads about current affairs, books, films etc., etc., but very recent stuff about some woman from a tv ad, Flintstones movies, z-list celebs et al is not something that inflames the intellectual pyre.
It must be bad if posters such as Lizard, magoo and jj aren't contributing very much as they can make dull material interesting. But dull is as dull will be. But Terry May and Holden McGroyn always make me laugh.
Now, I've just been writing a new course on Chaucer. Anyone ? And, whatever happened to Giles ? He could be controversial but he was often challenging and interesting. And the only person who admitted he'd read Knut Hamsun.

Re: interesting posts...where are they?
There'll be enough Bush-bashing (sounds like a euphemism) going on during the 9/11 inquiry without us adding our, already well-publicised, views on the subject.
One thing hasn't changed, though, BC; you still see any attack on the government or leaders of the US as an attack on every American. There have been plenty anti-Blair threads here, but that doesn't make us anti-British. There's a lot in America to admire.

It's a broad church, WillieBo, and there's room equally for your treatise on how much Chaucer ripped off Boccacio and Steve's inquiries on the Flintstones film.
Wasn't Knut Hamsun the guy that sang with his fellow pre-pubsescent brothers, or was he first secretary general of the UN?
Where did I put my last intelligent brain cell?

Talking of Secretary Generals of the UN, Bimmercat never backed up his claim about all the Commies there.

Re: Charge to 300
Perhaps it's just the time of the year: March is almost always the dullest of months. Political fatigue maybe, and there's very little going on in any of the cultural fields WillieBo mentions in his post (that jazz-lite Callum berk and Mellua bint everywhere, premiership grinds on, new series of 24 something of a dud, Starsky & Hutch goes in one eye and out of the other, Hustle absolute rubbish, as is that aspergers novel they're all reading at the mo, etc.) That said, posting about not posting might kick things into gear.
"Let's do it..."
Re: Charge to 300
All in favour of the broad church and love loads of the posts that ensue. But the forum has to be more than just some regurgitation of the drivel that masquerades as telly or who's what where and who gives a fuck in the red tops.
Don't get me started on Cullum, Norah Jones, Melua and their ilk. As a hardcore jazz fan I've had my guts full of people saying how wonderful they are. They aren't. Pale, nasty imitations of the real thing. Although it has got my wife now listening to Chet Baker which is a massive domestic boost.
I certainly don't ascribe to the 'Chaucer ripped off Boccacio' view. He used similar psychological approaches that see the consistent appearance (for perhaps one of the first times) of the individual and personal motivation in literature. But Chaucer's scope is wider and his matching of the narrator with the narrative style till then unequalled in literature. We have a tendency not to praise our famous men and diminish their achievements when compared to others (especially European). We even do it now with football clubs thinking foreign managers and players must be better. And that's not always true.
