But for the Grace of God

Post by DavidS »

Herman J. Mankiewicz once remarked of Orson Welles, "There, but for the Grace of God, goes God". Can anyone think of other candidates for this comment?

I thought the comment was made by RAB Butler about Macmillan.....
"a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the
signification...."

It may have been, jj. It was also made by Churchill about Sir Stafford Cripps. The remark about Orson Welles was made in 1940.
