I do have some sympathy with the view expressed by Tez but Tomsk is correct, it is very popular in Spain. It is another lie of the extreme animal rights lobby that only tourist keep the corrida going. It exist in spite of them, not because of them. Steve56 remark about Ava Gardner is correct and interesting. The Spanish bullfight has always been popular with some Americans, notably Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Non Iberian Europeans are less keen on it. That said, the Spanish style bullfight does take place in parts of France. I would be interested to know if any one give information why it is legal in parts of France and not others. Perhaps it is a coincidence but it seems to be those parts of France that did not come under German control (Vichy)l in the last war. I think bullfights also take place in parts of the USA, although not the brutal Spanish style. The bullfight is such a part of Spanish culture I cannot see any circumstances that there will be a total ban. That is not to approve of it, simply a fact of life.

I think its origins probably go back to the ancient Minoan bull dancers---now that was something to be admired.
