I think he was from Lancashire.

Correct. He was born in BURNAGE which is 5 miles SSE of Manchester city centre.

yeah he was mancurian he starred in the original redcap series in the 60s b4 the bbc remade it with tasmin outhwaite.

explains why he was more comfortable with his accent in Kavanagh QC.
have always found it interesting that he found fame as a rough edged cockney considering his later roles, especially Morse.
