In the days of cinema 'X' films, what was the difference between 'X' and 'XX' films?

I don't recollect there ever was a "XX" category.

U, A, AA, and X it always was, it seems, though X did originally start as H (for Horror).

My local flea pit had a list of certifications nailed to the wall inside, but it definately listed XX.
