He was a larger than life character and one who made the leap from football onto the mainstream via Question of Sport.

I was lucky enough to meet him some years ago and he made a big point of chatting to us and stayed around for 10-15 mins doing so even though we were making him late as he had to go elsewhere.

He was a nice bloke too.

I had the pleasure of spending a whole day with him once, shooting the pictures of him on a meet and greet tour in Sheffield. He was exactly the same bloke as you'd think he was from his TV persona, a genuine man, who even forced down a curry, (he couldn't stand it) so as not to offend the chef who had created the dish especially for him.

I probably also witnessed his last public appearance, at a charity dinner, a few weeks ago. It was truly heartbreaking to see him wheeled in in a wheelchair, and break down in tears halfway through his speach.

This is one man who I will have no problem with when it comes to the overused minutes silence.
We have need of you again, great king.

The thing I noticed when we met him was that nothing was too much trouble.

We were all half pissed and most celebrities would have told us to get lost. In fact most ordinary people would have told us to get lost.

Not Emlyn. He was happy to take 10-15 mins out of his life to talk about football etc.

Genuinelly moved by his passing. Living abroad throughout much of the 70's, we were fed Liverpools games, and you had to admire them with Hughes in the team..........as were ALL the players in the team.
Todays team should watch those games and realise what heart and soul of a team is when they watch Paisleys men.
Chelsea would beat them today.............AFTER we got the ball off them, they were THAT good.......and thats coming from me, a seasoned Scouse basher!!

The West London of my youth is now on dvd

I've met the man on the street............and he's a cunt

I met him several times when I was a kid, as his now late father "Ginger" Hughes and one of my uncles played rugby league together for their hometown club, Barrow.

He was a genuinely funny and warm-hearted man.

May he rest in peace.
