Yes! why not ban fucking everything else as well, the local A and E department is full of 'smoking' related injuries every weekend, while we are at it, lets ban people who are on the dole or unemployed from going into pubs, as they are not supposed to be enjoying life, lets also ban motorists who hold people up, because they are terrible drivers, and lets ban chav parents who take thier badly behaved chav kids into pubs as well, in fact lets shoot them.

Steve it sounds a good idea in practice . but the truth is it is very unfair , and I say that as an ex-smoker , who went through hell to quit.
If the government tried to bring in any legislation ,which effected a minority in the same way as the proposed ban on smoking, there would quite rightly be a public outcry.
Remember smoking is almost impossible to stop. I still struggle one year after stopping. In addition think of this.
Smokers pay higher taxes by way of duty
The die earlier and so are deprieved of state benefits.
The cost of treating a smokers terminal disease is roughly the same as treating a non smokers disease
So lets be fair, pubs , bars , food outlets with no smoking areas and a bt of tolerance all round would not go amiss.

well last xmas day i had xmas dinner in a local pub;when this woman sat right near me and started smoking i had to leave half of it,same thing happened last summer in a cafe.

I don't smoke and never have done but I am not bothered about people smoking in pubs and clubs etc. I just sort of accept that it happens.
The only thing that I do get annoyed about is inconsiderate smokers. For example if a group of us go out for something to eat and are all sat at the same table then I get annoyed if someone lights up before everybody else has finished.

If it's such a great idea and wanted by the majority, how come no one has opened a chain of pubs with no smoking ?
Is that not what Wetherspoon's did with music ?
How is Gordon Brown going to fill the gap in the finances or is the hope that smokers will spend more time in open air indulging ?
How much does it cost to run all the maternity wards up and down the country ? Add to that cost all the SMP paid out. Maybe we could ban childbirth.

They still smoke in Morrisons Cafes....ugh..my teenage stepdaughter mixes with a mate who is 17 who has a little baby.She gets about ?130 on the social and spends about ?40 a week on her habit..she smokes around the nipper without thought...and when my one comes she stinks out the house ...I hate the smell..to any smokers reading this have you any idea how much you reek!!!

I think we've covered this before. I'd have no problem with pubs, clubs etc having smoking and non-smoking areas as long as they were well seperated, though most haven't been designed to take this into account these days. I imagine this ban will force smokers to smoke more at home, to the annoyance of other family members who don't and also in front of the children. Telling teenagers what they can and can't do in public is also a non-starter. A harsh and badly-planned action, typical of our present Govt.
