You can get a four-bedroom house with pool built to your own specs in Thailand for ?30k.

It's a good plan building your own. A couple of my pals have done it, and saved (or made) a comfortable ?50,000. Of course you need a bit of spare time and patience organising all the tradesmen, but it is doable and, I would imagine, very satisfying. Problem is finding a nice (generous) plot of land nowadays.
