Techie Help Req: PC Not Recognizing External H/D

Post by Holden MacGroyn »

Well chaps, I'm slightly ready to kick my pc out of the window.

Today, I decided to get an external drive in the shape of an empty external box and a Maxtor 250g internal as I was told it would work out cheaper.

Now the thing is, my PC wont recognize the new drive with a letter.
It shows up in the device manager and says it's working properly but I for the life of me can't get it assigned a letter and without that, I can't do anything.

Can anybody out there help me as I'm going nuts with this.

I've looked across the net with varying answers but nothing that is working for me.

Assuming you are running W2K or XP can you see the drive in disk manager? If you can, can you assign it a drive letter through that?

FWIW I had major problems with one of those DIY firewire external drives a few years back to the point that I just gave up - I know they are a little more costly but buying a complete unit is so much easier!

I can see the drive but there is no way for me to assign it a drive letter.

It's so fucking bastard annoying.

If you are still stuck I suggest you try (if you haven't already) the control panel option , assuming you are using XP.
