Making a new porn company

Post by Slater »

Ive been away for a few days so I couldnt reply to the last post I put up so Im bringing it back to prominence to have a reply seen.

Ok...

That was a little harsh on other peoples behalf I thought, I think Jack was right though, I think that whatever business you open you have to fight off the old pros and make a new space for yourself. Isnt it possible that people are getting sick of seeing the same formulaic videos all the time?

Im not saying that there is anything wrong with Omar or Ben Dover or any of the other well known companies but its the same guys doing the same things to different women. Fair enough we all watch porn for the women so thats all that needs to be changed but why cant we mess around with the formats? Why cant we expect some serious build ups like buttman has?
Why are we supposed to say, yeah I think its good that we have to the same tired looking old guys having sex with young women. Nobody likes it, its just that those are the only films we get to see. Because the older guys that run the business are keeping the younger film makers and studs down.
Dont get me wrong, I fully believe the stories about guys saying they have huge dicks and could shag for england but cant even get it up. These guys are pricks anyway, you can tell bu their language. What we need is undersexed perverts that just want to shag anything i.e Pascal who is now somehow trademarked to Ben Dover. I could talk about this all day but I want somebody else to say something so that I can have a serious discussion with them.

And if this isnt the place to do it, then where is?

if nobody likes it..why does it sell so well? I for one love Ben's stuff..'tired looking old guy' or not....as you say I'm more interested in the girls.

Could you really talk all day on the subject? Flippin' hell.

Let's look at 'Camboy' on TVX. Why? Brand new male star (as far as I'm aware - well, he isn't Ben or Omar or Marino). I'm bored of him. I like the series it's more daring, fantastic looking ladies etc but the format is old, predictable, been done before (and been done better). It's easy to say "formats need to change" but with old due respect I don't see your post abundant with ideas.

I enjoy these "old guys" and the reason they're still going (STILL going in the case of Mr Dover) is because they were there at a time when a gap was open in a particular market and they filled it added to the fact that a lot of us DO like them. If they were to start out today I wouldn't rate their chances of being succesful to the level of their current success. However Ben is also a witty, camera friendly guy with a good sense of what works. Omar also is very easy on the eye and his penis is large. Don't under-estimate the importance for the viewer of that - we can talk about male attraction within porn another time - but I reckon that's part of Omar's appeal. Marino too is fun, sharp and seems pretty ego-free on camera.

So I'm not sure if "under-sexed perverts" are all that are required. Where would Pascal be if not on Ben Dover? I think a female sexual hunger is part of what may be required - some of the ladies are brimming with it but still some look as if they're at a funeral - however with guys sexual hunger isn't as important as just "being able to do the job" and we all know what that requires. If sexual hunger is a requirement then fine, if not - fine. Whatever.

I was watching 'Sex and Shopping' on C5 last week (yes, now you know who the viewer is) and was struck by the comments of 'John T Bone' and his apparent jealousy at male performers ("I don't give a fuck about them... they are a prop - they come to work, get an erection, penetrate the girls then they can fuck off home.") It may work for him but if I were to come up with an idea, I'd look at this... what's changed in UK based programmes in the last few years? The set or location, the theme (schoolgirls, fantasy etc), the performers - most thins have changed however there's never been any MAJOR change in the interaction between guy and girl or girl and girl as far as I can remember, with possibly a couple of exceptions. When there has been an attempt at change it's been so stale and fake that it simply hasn't worked. Now look at where thing appear to be heading... take the road trips from Marino and co. - where they go isn't important - the key to the series is the very informal and friendly attitude between all people. Males are not props who fuck off home again after they've provided the dick. The ladies are not the receptical going through the motions for the sake of the pay packet. I haven't spent much time expanding on the idea becuase at this stage I'm not looking to do anything about it, but we seem to be heading towards a market where popular stuff is when genuinely hot sex and a substantial amount of atraction go hand in hand with having a laugh and letting hair down.

Or something like that. What? Is that you nurse? Time for the injection again? Sigh. I have to go nowwwww.w........

"Older guys keeping the youngsters down"
"Talk all day"
etc.
Your lack of reply address makes me wonder about you but since I've nothing better to do.....
The guy who invented the Dyson didn't worry about Hoover did he?
This, like any other. is a free market. You make a product - some like it, some don't.
Many people call my stuff utter crap - do I shoot myself!
You wanna change the world - go ahead & give it your best shot.
I did when I was a mere strippling (with varied results)
What I did NOT do was moan about it in public, even allowing for the fact that a computer in those days was a secret weapon confined to the IC/RS in Bletchley.

"Its going to be different" is the second most common statment I hear, first is "I was just flicking through the channels". I wish you well but you would probably find alienating yourself from the old guys who could help you, seems a bit like a scrap yard dog that barks at everyone even the one that feeds it,

Though I agree with Phil/Marcus et al. that alienating everyone in your business is generally a very very unwise move, I can, if I'm honest, sympathise with Slater a little.

His original posting brought up a fairly sound point, that there are a select few who appear to have the market entirely sewn up in the U.K (yes granted probably quite desevadly so, years of hard work, dedication and all)

This elite clique..'the brit porn boys' appear to very much stick together and don't take kindly to anyone trying to break in. Underestandable I suppose as business is business, and the last thing you want after years of hard slog building up a following and a nice comfortable little living for youself is someone better coming along to take away all your customers and your job. Understandable yes, but nevertheless in the longrun feel a pretty unhealthy attitude.

Speaking entirely from a business viewpoint more competition needn't be a bad thing. Porn like any other business has to move with the times and must be willing to diversify to meet the ever changing needs of the consumer. This is vital for it's longterm survival and prosperity.

For example, when Stagliano came along in the late 90's, and virtually revolutionised porn with the 'gonzo' style, he effectively breathed new life into the industry and gave what had become in many ways a stagnent and complacent business a much needed jolt.

Now after a decade of this stuff, alot of people are tiring of the 'gonzo' format. It's been done to death and for many it's beginning to seriously bore. Some sort of change is clearly needed, the business is crying out for a Stagliano figure for the Mellenium, someone frsh and exciting with imaginative and creative new ideas. The only way we are going to get that is by encouraging more and more people into the industry and resisting the urge to band together to try and keep them out.

As for the new blood well some will succeed, most will fail, but one thing is for sure, there will be no lack of new and exciting material hitting the shelves. Far from to many cooks spoiling the broth I feel that the more fresh and original people working out there, the better. A more open market can surely only be a good thing. It has the potential to bring the best out in all, even the old guys (the business dinosaurs!) who will be knocked out of complecency and forced to improve their product to survive.

The ennevitable result is all round benefeit for both consumers and the business.

Don't get me wrong I dont think people like Ben Dover should retire, Ben must NEVER retire...he is MR U.K porn...a living breathing legend...I'm sure he'll hate me for saying this but hes the nearest thing the u.k has to a Ron Jeremy..just a not so fat cockney version! However much as I admire Dover et all, I just feel there's room for others as well...and that's the point I want to make in a nutshell... it's time they got a break.

cheers for listening guys

Rich,
You must have had a hard night or something - read my post again,it said it the same way (I hope) in a fraction of the time.
Long live free/new enterprise.
One thing though, producers do not control the biz. Major distributors do. This topic has been worked to death.

How many different ways can one re-invent the wheel? You could put chrome alloys on it, spray paint it like flames. Hell, you could even put mauve coloured tyres on it, but it's still gonna be porn.

Here's an idea if you want it. Get loads of cash. I mean shit loads. Convince the Linsey Dawns and Adele Stephens of this country to do a gang bang anal style and you'd be half way there. You'll be hailed as a hero on this forum, that much is for sure and you'd be winning the respect (and hatred) of all your peers in the industry...Problem is you might not ever make your money back from the distribution unless you did it yourself of course...All the same, good luck anyway.
