A outlet you may not have thought of is Richer sounds, I bought a lot of goods both music and DVD equipment off them and they are top notch. I will put a link in for you, they have some nice DVD recorders at great prices, a couple of really nice Pioneer Recorders. Also look around the internet at reviews, if you see a recorder you are interested in copy its model number in google and see if there are any reviews for that perticulare model.

I have a Sony DVD recorder with a 80GB HDD it's great (Sony RDR-HX510). It is about twice what you budgeted for unfortunantly (in the range of ?300 to ?350 I think now). If you can stretch, the extra flexability the HDD gives in recording and editing is worth it.

Been 100% happy with my Pioneer.

Panasonic give decent results too however I find less flexible to use.
Also full size recording is 704 x 576 rather than 720x576 which is not always compatible should you wish to add computer generated titles etc.

Upside is Panasonic recordings from poor VHS can be more stable than from Panasonic.

I tend to make rough copies on RW discs then tidy up, chapter and title on the PC before burning.

If you want to do all on the recorder try and push the budget to a machine with HDD.

I bought a "Home Cinema" magazine last November and they reviewed about a dozen DVD recorders (some with hard disk).

The winner was the Panasonic DMRES20D (without hard disk) that was about ?260 at the time.

This has now dropped in price and can be had for about ?170 in Argos etc.

It has no hard disk but does have a digital Freeview box built in.
