Public Holidays

Although we hear a lot about Britain having less public holidays than the rest of Europe, I do wonder if we really need so many. The May Day bank holiday is too close to Easter and the weather is rarely is summer mode. The late May bank holiday used to celebrate Whitsun but was changed about 40 years ago and during the summer there is only one at the end of August. Surely it would be better to scrap the two May and the August Bank holidays and add 3 days to everyones' holiday entitlement so they can take them when they wish.

I agree there are to many close together in the spring when the weather is shite they should be spaced out through june and july trouble is it would mean rewriting the bible and moving easter and whitsun on a bit and as that will never happen we will just have to put up with it!happy!

I thought Whitsun was/is the late May bank holiday.

I agree that a lot of Bank Holidays appear too close together. Especially if Easter is late in April.

Recently they moved the Late May one into early June and added a special day off (For the Queens Golden anniversary I think) It was good having the extra long weekend in June. Wish this could be a permanent thing.

They moved the August Bank holiday from the beginning of August to the end of August years ago. I wish this had not happened as the weather at the beginning of August is normally better.

Whitsun is a moveable date and depends on the date of Easter. The Bank Holiday used to fall on the Whit weekend but is now fixed on the last Monday in May. The August Bank Holiday was changed to reduce road casualties although I never could understand how it made a difference.

I know what you mean, I used to make a fortune from working Bank Holidays!
