Anyone else out there who was a fan of New York sex mag High Society and its editor Gloria Leonard in the late Seventies and 1980s?
One of the raunchiest mags of its day, Gold Star brought out a British edition in about 1978, but alas this was short-lived as was their attempt to copy the H S style in the likes of Rustler and Journal of Sex. Though GSP were as explicit as possible, they seemed to lack interest in their product.
The enterprising Ms Leonard was very much "hands-on" in her job, quite literally so in supervising the witty and outrageous near-hardcore photo shoots and also wrote as well as being heavily involved in the promotion and distribution side, pushing back the boundaries in the process. She was a vociferous defender of porn and sexual freedom and anti-sex feminists found her a formidable opponent.
Under her influence, High Society became a pioneer of phone-sex, explicit shots of older women and nude photos of celebrities.
Of course she also starred in many classic fuck-films and had plenty of time for affairs with the likes of media mogul Ted Turner. A woman who did things her way and a true hero of porn.
High Society is still going strong today but is just another porn mag.
