Soon all sorts of people like council workers, schoolteachers, social workers and community support officers will beable to fine you ?100 on the spot for a host of new crimes such as anti-social behaviour, spitting, littering and being drunk.
We slide faster and faster down the slippery slope of authoritarianism towards the police state. This new law is being fast tracked through Parliament to add to the three thousand or so new laws that this government has enacted. Blair is hell bent on destroying what little precious remains of our hard won civil liberties.

Really you cannot win in this country ...
Everybody is agreed that this country is in the state it is in because of these petty crimes going unpunished, so when somebody acts to stamp this sort of stuff out or make the chances of being caught higher - the usual brigade get on their high horses complaining about it .... seems some of you guys aint exactly sure of what you are arguing for/against??
I would guess us Brits still have not lost our age old tradition of being top moaners as that certainly aint eroded through time it seems.
Steve my boy you are caught erm red handed and must hand over your ?80 to Caractacus Plc (wash those hands first!!).

PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

I wouldn`t worry, its not like its going to be for much longer . Me and my family were die hard labour supporters and will be voting tory before we vote labour again. I`m sure they just can`t handle the pressure of
government so they`re doin their damndest to get voted out

I'll tell you what's next. The most serious threat to civil liberties this government has forced on us, the ID card. Not too long now before you will have to make an appointment to attend a registration centre where you will be forced to have your eyed scanned, dabs taken, probably your DNA swabbed. You will have to provide every address you have ever lived at and a whole list of other info. Failure to submit to this will result in a huge fine and or imprisonment. In future any interaction you have in a situation such as opening a bank account, paying a utility bill, borrowing a book from the library, and so on will entail your card being swiped and a record being taken of the transaction. A whole dossier of your life will be built up to which you will have no access. The government will not only spy on you using this info, but will also sell it to businesses to recoup some of the huge costs involved. The scheme will have a massive failure rate, after being very late and over budget, so that everyday tens of thousands of people will be inconvenienced by false readings. I would give it a month before it is cracked by forgers, terrorists, criminals. It will fundamentally alter the relationship between the governed and the governers. 'Us' will become beholden to 'them'. We will have to prove and justify our existance to faceless civil servants and the police. It has always been a proud boast in this country that as long as you kept your nose clean, the state would have little interference in your life. Thanks to the Reverend Blair, say goodbye to just living your life free from prying.

That's exactly right. Yet another silly and ultimately futile New Labour "initiative" that's all about being "seen to be doing something" that will do nothing at all to tackle the root cause of crime and delinquency in the UK. But given New Labour's seemingly inexhaustible desire to criminalise normal people, it will be a great way for them to once again artificially boost crime clear-up rates and say "look what we've achieved".

Agreed. On a German forum that I occasionally frequent (like Britain, Germany is also run by a bunch of incompetent, spineless fools with their snouts in the trough who are hell-bent on ripping off and criminalising ordinary hard-working folk), one poster described voting in elections here (I'm in Germany) as - and I quote - "like being forced to choose between the Devil and Satan". I thought that summed it up perfectly, and it's an anaology that can be applied equally to the UK, I think.
