Hey all
OK now things like this aint my strong point and too be honest its all a wee bit new too me,so bear with me and dont take the piss if im being a Benny here. Right due too direct debits and payment cards the only household bill which is ever really a supprise is my gas bill, and too be honest i live in fear of that envolope lying waiting for me when i come home. As a result and due too an increase in her goverment heating money my Gran (gawd bless 'er) has given me an electric fire. Two bars coal effect jobby (quite nice, the fuckers going on E bay at some point) Will this be cheaper too use than the central heating?
All feedback appreciated chaps. Thankyou
Thankyou
BB

Gas Vs Electric???

Will it fuck!!
I won't ramble on too much, but to keep that fucker going will heat a section of the house, whereas the heating system will heat the whole house. Turn your room stat to 18-20 degrees which will take the chill off.
A 2 bar heater costs about 15p per hour to use, and it soon mounts up and the area soon cools down when its off.

Gas is a lot cheaper than electric per unit, gas is about 1 or 2 pence whereas electric is more like 7 pence per unit kw/h.

Re: Gas Vs Electric???
The main problem with gas is where it's all going to be coming from in the next few years. Much of Europe is already dependent on Russia. There was a spat between Russia and Georgia last year over gas supplies; a few weeks ago, a big chunk of Germany and westwards went dark after a cold snap led to a huge hike in demand for leccy.
We need to find a sustainable, environmentally clean form of power---and soon. If we have to go cap in hand to the likes of Putin and his lads, or depend on Bush's magical pipeline crossing Afghanistan, central heating may no longer be an option.

Re: Gas Vs Electric???
Maybe some of you chaps can correct me on this.
I seem to remember the media stating that we were going to run low on gas and there would be a crisis before Xmas. Then the prices rocketed up to reflect this. The next thing I heard was an interview on Beeb news saying that the crisis was over, the companies that *store* the gas were paying gas companies to take it away!
However, the gas companies stated that a reduction would take a few months to filter through (I'm guessing around Spring time? Shrewd move) - despite having this free supply of gas.
Personally, I'm with Caractacus in thinking we need an alternative, but like petrol cars - will the governments and business leaders be so quick to give up something they have such control over?
Crikey. I'm turning into a right little activist since reading this site! !nerd!

Re: Gas Vs Electric???
While gas price has price risen sharply still far cheaper than electric for heating and hot water.
I only use electric occasionally to boost temperature in one room.

The gas fields in the North Sea are almost depleted, we rely on our gas from the vast Russian supply. We do have masses stored incase of a cold snap which we are expecting.
Every 40 years or so, Britain experience a REALLY cold 6 months. We had the last one in 1962, and are due one again soon, but with Global Warming, experts are undecided if we will get one as severe as expected.
With trade and commerce what it is, don't expect Putin to hold onto his gas............he needs our crops etc.

Re: Gas Vs Electric???
As Ace said, Russia has large reserves of natural gas and is the main supplier to most of Europe. It also needs the currency from the sale of gas to keep going, as well as various other trade agreements which ensure that the prices won't suddenly be hiked to hold the rest of us to ransom, as we can do the same with commodities Russia needs.
The biggest threat to our gas supply comes from two sources. The gas pipeline from Russia goes through Ukraine and any dispute between Ukraine and Russia could see the pipeline closed. The other threat is from a terrorist act to blow up the pipeline. Either of these scenarios, even short-term, would put a strain on our own reserves, all the more so if it happened in winter.
