No thats bollox,
The PS3 games are REGION FREE as are blue ray discs
(you may want to stock up on them from the U.S too), also the power unit INSIDE the PS3 is universal, you do not need a step down voltage convertor, all you need is a plug for it (a kettle plug is all that is needed)

Hope that helps

I think you should read some of the reviews on P3, We have been studing it and Wii and 360. PS3 UK versions are made in China and have a different board build, remeber all the issues with the first PS2's The disks are regioned but at the start they may well be open region. The US PS3 were made in Japan so should be in theory better. I would do some research yourself on the PS3 forums before you pass with cash. My favorite would be 360 as I know for a fact there is an open web browser allowing you to download our EPG... That would let you use it as a web-tool viewing IPTV and all its content. The other issue to concider is warranty.
Just my views,

The US and Japanese made PS3 will work in the UK with a Kettle lead.

The key bit is the PSU info:

100-240V
50-60Hz

If it says that, it will work as it has a universal power supply.

There are 3 regions to BluRay;

1 - North America, Central America, South America, Koreas, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

2 - Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

3 - India, Nepal, Mainland China, Russia, Central and South Asia.

However the PS3 is region-free for gaming, but this is dependant on the games publisher - the box is, the games might not be.

It is not region-free for movies.

Yes it will work fine, all you need is a kettle lead plug. It steps down the voltage itself. It was cheaper for sony to make them like that.
The games are region free, I made a boo boo and said blue rays too, they are not. I was thinking of HD DVD, that is region free (ie xbox 360)

here is what I found on a site for you.

Okay, I've bought a PS3, what sort of stepdown transformer do I need?

Despite a wealth of information existing on this particular subject, it transpired that you don't actually need one! A standard PC/Kettle lead will do the trick, since the PS3 has a 110v-240v power supply built in

We have confirmation from SCEA now that the power supply inside the Playstation 3 is, in fact, universal. The power supply supports 100 to 240 volts at 50 to 60 Hertz, which is useable in all modern power grids -- including Europe. Although European markers require a different physical plug for their infrastructure, there is no need to replace the power supply.

Okay, I wanna watch some of these new Blu-ray films, what's the deal?

Rightio, unlike Toshiba's region-free HD-DVD's, Blu-ray does make use of region-coding. Both Japanese and American PS3's share the same region (A1), therefore American Blu-ray DVD's will work quite happily on a Japanese machine and vice versa.

Here's a brief breakdown of the Blu-ray Regions;

A1 - North America, Central America, South America, Korea, Japan and South East Asia.

B2 - Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

C3 - China, Russia, Central and South Asia.

Will I incur Customs/VAT etc?

In all probability, yes. Unless you've specified to a retailer to mark down the package, then look to pay in the vicinity of around ?100.

Are PS3 games region-locked?

Nope, well, neither NTSC-J or NTSC-U games are. Both boot fine on either a Japanese or American machine. Rumour suggests however, that European games won't work on an NTSC machine and vice versa.
