Great Britain Nil Points

Just been watching the Eurovision hopefuls show. I think we can expect a "nil points" year this year with the absolute crap that we have as options to vote for. When will GB put on a rock act for Eurovision? I got quite excited when I heard Justin Hawkins was one of the hopefuls (hey its not real rock but hes a whole lot better than that old midlife crisis dad that thought he could rap with school kids from last year!) but after hearing half of his song I couldnt bear to hear any more! And I dont even have nice words to say about the campfest that they called Scooch.

It was all shite.
I endured the results bollocks after I'd watched Casualty, and the best bits with the singers were Brian Harvey looking pissed off he'd gone first, and poncy coke-head Justin Hawkins storming off because he'd got knocked out when he was bragging he'd win it. Twat.
Overall best bit was Terry Wogan getting the result wrong and Fearne (phwoarr) Cotten bailing him out.
It WAS St Patricks Day after all, and I suppose Terry had been on the ol' Guiness meaning he got the result, embarrasingly for the BBC with all the hype over dodgy phone-ins, wrong. Fearne, after all got it right, but she was obviously hurrying the show along so she could 'comfort' ol' Justin in the green room with a 'line'

Incidently.....what do you call a man with a 2" cock?

I admit to watching it... !blush!

But I didn't hang around for the result, just picked it up this morning. This country (rightly) treats Eurovision as a joke, and submits joke entries. In a "real" music contest, Big Brovas would have won hands down, but why bother to submit a "real" group to Eurovision?

I wonder what happened to Big Brovas careers? They used to make great music.

The fact that it's still around suggests there's an audience for it but the songs need to have such broad appeal that they're inevitably bland. Hawkins' appearance is indicative of his desperation for publicity .. The Darkness were a pastiche of a rock band so I wouldn't expect anything credible from Hawkins.

I dare say as a contest it throws up some competent pop songs in terms of melodies and hooks, but it's 'middle-of-the road' stuff typified by the presenter - Wogan.

I really had my fingers crossed for a rock entry this year. It has been nice seeing the slowly increasing number of decent rock entries in Eurovision and I was happily cheering on for Lordi last year and for Wig Wam the year before that. I'm obviously not a big fan of cheesy pop songs and would much rather see a decent song get put forward as our entry rather than the pathetic attempts of the last few years. Its just middle - old aged people deciding what they think young people like as music. They are not real musical entries, they are stereotypes and piss takes of real music entries.

It's always been like that. Britain's one of the few countries in Europe with a really good music export industry. We produce a lot of good music, so Eurovision's a joke really. Britain in Eurovision is like a premiership footballer playing in your local Sunday league.

Most of the other big countries also take the piss, but the smaller countries take it seriously. It's a big deal for somewhere like Finland or Israel to win Eurovision, but does Britain need or want to win? Nah - it would be embarrassing.

From a UK point of view it lacks credibility as far as music is concerned because as you say the UK industry doesn't need the 'validation' or confidence that Eurovision might offer to some.
Still, you could argue that originally it wasn't about music but more about creating a shared sense of European identity.
It's harmless and innocuous stuff .. until you spend time watching and listening !grin!

I admit I watch it - at least in the background. It's entertaining and it's better to have a music competition than fight wars with each other.

The politics are also funny... Britain is NEVER going to win it now that Eastern Europe has joined in. We're just not liked very much... so it's probably right that we don't put forward a Big Brovas (or an Oasis, Jamiroquai, Arctic Monkeys...) because we'd lose anyway! I'd rather lose with something camp and stupid like Scooch, than a serious entry. I hope that's why people voted for Scooch last night... it would be sad to think there are people who really preferred them to Big Brovas.
