Roadside Shrines

Post by Lizard »

One see's so many of these nowdays, on my travels I cant help but feel sorry for the people who died, however I have noticed they all seem to have one thing in common, there is nearly alway,s an England football shirt strung up somewhere, why is that, is it only England football supporters who have fatal road accidents, or is there a mystery England football shirt vendor despatched to the scene of the carnage, or is it simply that the majority of these accidents involve young teeenage lads with very little driving experience, but a great knowlege of the beautiful game.

In most cases that's (sadly) exactly it: Would-be boy-racers with too little experience, an over-inflated belief in their own driving skills and a tragically misplaced sense of immortality - in many cases I'd wager that attempts to impress their mates (or some bird) come into it as well, with the equally tragic but inevitable "collateral damage" in many cases.

These roadside shrines have been common here in Germany for decades, and in 20+ years I've never seen a single one dedicated to the memory of anyone over the age of about 25. Not that I habitually stop to have a read, but I do live in a rural area (the Black Forest) with lots of twisty roads and large trees and I've chanced on a fair few while out walking.

I say leave'em alone! I thought roadside shrines were just an american thing but to me they're a reminder of how life can be lived and taken away. Yes young people seem to be the ones more often seen but I've seen others like state troopers and road workers also.

No it didn't! According to another post it's been a thing in "Germany for decades" so don't blame the U.S. for that. Heck! Just like yours, ours is on trees and mostly they're crosses sometimes posted in the ground.

I think the local florist starts them off then all the fukwits feel that they have to follow suit.
