PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

Just watching shows like 'America's Funniest Home Videos' makes me sometimes question the concept of universal suffrage. The Founding Fathers certainly distrusted democracy; as originally framed in the U.S. Constitution, only half of one-third of the federal government was subject to popular vote,& that despite rather limited voting rights back then--basically land or money-holding white males over 21.

Re: Are americans really this stupid
I was once travelling to Vegas from LA, and were accompanied by 2 English girls, 4 American girls, a Hungarian guy, another English guy, and a security guard who was visiting from Zimbabwe.
We got onto the subject of good places to visit around Europe, with Greek architecture seeming a popular destination wish. One of the English girls happened to mention that though she'd been to Paris lots of times, she'd never got the chance to see the Eiffel Tower. Three out of the four American girls were convinced the Eiffel Tower was in Vegas.........
Our 2 people carriers were stopped by a traffic cop around the border between California & Nevada as some of the girls were flashing. The cop didn't see anything but he knew anyhow.
Anyway, upon taking our details, he stared blankly at our man from Zimbabwe, and thought his passport was fake. He just couldn't understand how a man from Africa was white. For a while I thought we were all gonna get thrown in the clink, but he seemed convinced/confused enough to let us carry on after a while.
Americans aren't stupid, but boy can they be ignorant of the world outside their own back yard. (more so -I find- than other nationalities anyway).

This is very true. Folks in other countries dont realize how ignorant Americans are about the rest of the world. The U.S. is, contrary to belief, not only unsophisticated, but insular. Which is one reason we as a people --the 'man in the street'I mean--get so upset every time we get entangled in foreign affairs.
