How Green is Blair?
How Green is Blair?
Tell me if I'm wrong here, but over the past 10 YEARS hasn't Nu Labour been preaching to all of us not to be so polluting and been raising taxes on things like motor fuel and air fuel in or order to stop us from flying and driving so much? Well, tell me if I'm wrong again, but did I see Blair recently do a world "good-bye tour"? Couldn't the hypocrite do that via the TV? Then there's fat man Prescott who's done a recent tour (read holiday) of North America and the Caribbean. You know, comes across as a very big case of "Do as I say, not as I do" to me. !annoyed!

Yes well all politicians are hypocrites and arseholes so what do you expect democracy !thumbsdown!
Re: How Green is Blair?
Probably Blair doesn't believe the over-hyped issue of the contribution the UK makes to CO2 emissions. Neither do I.
Doesn't the UK contribute just 2% of all the global CO2 emissions?
So, if we banned all 4x4s, didn't take aircraft, switched off all the set-top boxes we leave on standby, we would make.......errrrrr, well, no discernible difference to global warming.
The UK media has hyped our individual contributions out of all proportion to the real effect, but politicians have then found it easier to use the argument to increase taxes. No surprise there. I'll be paying ?300 road tax this year and ?400 next year for the pleasure of driving a 4-door saloon.
I can't find a list which ranks the highest polluting countries, but I believe the US is top, China is near the top, India is rising through the ranks, etc.
Chins is opening a new coal-fired power station every 10 days (I think that's correct). Any small steps that we take in the UK is vastly outweighed by the increased emissions in Chine and India.
So maybe Blair is not that out of line with reality.

Well then, why all the taxation of fuel to supposedly save the environment? That's what Blair and fat man Prescott have banged on for the past decade about, that they're over taxing motor fuel in order to save the ozone. So why all the jetting around the world when they've made the ozone as the reason for all the taxing?
Re: How Green is Blair?
Yes, you are absolutely right Mojo.
I believe that politicians have just jumped on the bandwagon created by the media in this country and used it as an excuse to increase taxes.
I find it difficult to listen to, or watch UK news broadcasts any more, since there is always at least one gloom and doom item about how we should be fitting solar heating, use less packaging, etc. Yes, the ice sheets are melting, but we, in the UK, are contributing so little towards the problem. (sorry, I know people from other countries do post here, but this thread was initially about Blair).
I certainly believe that global warming is a reality, but I disagree that if we in the UK are highly taxed and therefore consume less, that any real difference to global warming is going to occur, due to the fact that we only produce 2% of the total world emissions.
Thanks for the opportunity for a rant. I'm off to the pub to get pissed now. No doubt afterwards I will produce enough methane gas to melt some more of the Arctic.

I know you're getting pissed at the mo, but I'll still answer anyway.
"I believe that politicians have just jumped on the bandwagon created by the media in this country and used it as an excuse to increase taxes."
I always say to judge a politician by their actions, not by what they say. If a politician one minute says tax fuel to get people out of their cars and save the environment, then the very next minute jumps into their V6 Jag or their private jet, then you can tell that they don't believe in a word they're saying and they're just using the motorist as a cash cow.

Did you know that sunglasses are supposed to be bad for you now?! Next thing our greedy Scottish run government will be doing is putting extra taxes on shades!

What I want to know is why we, a tiny little country has to take up the slack of countries like China, India and especially the mega rich USA! !annoyed!
