If you think that the situation in the middle east will be solved with our interference then you are very very naive or stupid.

There never will be peace in that region in your lifetime or mine.

And unfortuantly he did die for nothing....

As the so called war/invasion / liberation whatever is utterly pointless as they don't want our help.

No, I do not think the situation in the 'middle east' -Afghanistan in this instance- will be resolved just with our interference. I do, however, think we can go a long way in helping.

I remember hearing -can't remember where- that the Teleban's spring offensive hasn't materialised this year for the first time since we arrived in Afghanistan. Apparently the Teleban's biggest offensive was last year and they took such a pummelling from the British that they've stopped targeting British troops now(in general) and have turned their attentions to helpless Afghan citizens (which any cowardly rag-tag of an army can do).

I do think that a combined Iraq/Afghan conflict has stretched resources, and I do think the parallel conflicts will make for slower progress in both conflicts. I do not, however, think the genuine citizens of both countries do not want our help. An Iraqi/Afghan guy sending his kids to school would be mad -or a Islamic nutcase- to prefer Islamic extremists take over the streets, laying down their medieval rule over the population. I do think the common folk are edgy, not knowing whom to trust. I do think the locals want to help our cause but are frightened of us pissing off and leaving them exposed as traitors by their more extremist brothers, to which they can look forward to their family raped & beheaded, before they are tortured themselves.

Any Iraqi, or Afghan you speak to honestly just wants assurances we're in for the long haul. Any hint we're going to pull out and they swap sides and ally themselves with the extremists, because that's what they need to do to survive. Under those circumstances, I'd be a little nervy about which side's the better option, with my families survival to consider.

Whatever your stance on the pro's & cons of these conflicts, we cannot leave the innocent civilians, who just want to raise a family and watch their grandchildren grow up, at the mercy of Islamic extremists. Afghanistan became the exact haven it became for terrorism, exactly because when the red army pissed off, the power hungry Mullah's moved in.

I genuinely feel that leaving these two nations in the lurch will be just a quick fix for current politicians to gain favour with voters at home. In 50 years time I can guarantee we'll have to go back, or defend Europe from a stronger, better dug in force.

When you knock your opponent to the canvass, you do not let him regain his bearings and strength. You may live to regret it in later rounds.
