Its not that I'm a heartless bastard, but I am glad those 1 minute silences to remember the victims of such and such seem to be rapidly disappearing. They cheapen the intention by the fact that you are basically forced to participate through fear of public scorn.
People should not feel pressure to join some organised public activity to show what they privately feel.

Re: Minutes Silences
Yes, they could put their hand in their pocket and just give to the charity. But almost as important as raising money is making people aware of the charity and its work, which is why bungee jumping, parachute jumps, relay events, white water rafting etc tend to be the means involved. Sure, Save The Children or Oxfam or the Anthony Nolan trust want cash to keep them going, but they also need people to understand what they do and why.
In the end, give or don't give, it's up to you. If you're only giving because of what people might think of you if you don't, then you're giving for the wrong reason. Give because you want to help, or take part for the same reason.
Giving isn't obligatory. There won't be crowds of angry people putside your house with burning torches because you decided not to. But anyone you know who has had to fight breast cancer or leukaemia, or whose child was born weeks or months prematurely, or whose parent is battling MS or Alzheimer's, has a reason to help the charity. If there are a lot of people coming round looking for sponsorship or donations, doesn't that say something about how widespread problems are?

Back on track now after that 'charity' divertissement....
...and perhaps we can dispense with flowers at every location where a
death has occurred, left by complete strangers. This all started with
Di-ahhhna and that nauseating wave of OTT 'emoting' and 'I feel your
pain' self-indulgence.
STOP IT ! Remember: you're BRITISH.....

Hey
I agree on the whole with almost every thing in this thread so far.
However.....
I belive that the national silence on the 11th of November, should always be observed....period!!
For fucks sake!! Surley its no to much to ask? That for a couple of minutes on one fucking day of the year we collectivly remember all the millions who not only gave thiere lives for us but the countless others who endurered often un imagianable amount of suffering so that we can live as we choose.
This has nothing to do with feeling scorn from others. Just a simple case of having a little fucking repect.
Sorry the spelling is shite but the sentiment comes across still I think
Cheers

Equally vital is to explain to kids why it's so important.
