Anyone here use cooking fat in their diesels?

I am amazed that this seems to work.drain the system,no modification required..funnel it in and off you go? With diesel over ?1 a litre now this must be worth it.I understand some people pay the tax..about 26p a litre..all totaly legal..

I do. I drive a Toyota Landcruiser and I use 100% recycled vegetable oil. It's sold from a place about two miles from my abode at 75p a litre, but they' cook' the used veggy oil (to get rid of the moisture in the oil) and put a few additives in to make it burn cleaner.
Anyone can do this but it means that you have to have copper tank with an element and a thermostat to 'cook it', any shed or garage will do, but it will smell like a kebab wagon.
Another way is buy new vegetable oil from the local supermarket and fill your tank about 3/4 full and then top it up with regular diesel.

It works for older low pressure diesels, but I believe it's not advisable for more modern common rail diesel engines.

A chap I know ran an old Peugeot 405 diesel on vegetable oil and had no problems. He worked in a kitchen, so had no problem getting the vegetable oil either!

Yes older diesels seem the answer....what are the disadvantages..cant see too many?

My little escort van only costs me a tenner a week in diesel, so not much point in changing. But I would give it a go if I did high mileage.

I'm a creature of habit and fear this kind of change. Just doesnt sound right. Besides I'll be damned if I try that in my brand new Freelander
