Harriet Harman, as a feminist, believes that prostitution is "violence against women" therefore now in power she wants to outlaw the oldest profession in the world not by banning prostitution but by banning the purchase of it!
Prostitutes have diverse reasons for selling sex: some believe that it is an easy way to earn money, and preferable to sitting behind a till all day in a supermarket for example, while others enjoy being paid for something that they enjoy, sex, or simply find it exciting. Most do it of their own free will and why should they not if they want to? If this is true why should their customers who are overwhelmingly men not purchase it?
In a free country people should be able to do what they like with their own bodies and for a government to pass laws and treat the population like children in loco parentis is to slide even faster down the slippery slope of authoritarianism.

I agree. As long as measures are put into place to protect the women then I'm sure it could be handled as professionally as any other service (masseuse, hairdresser, nail technician etc).
They can even start paying taxes on their income then!

Then it never could be fully legal.
You can purchase porn with your credit card pretty much anonymously, so I'm sure there'd be ways around it.

Sam,
Why not let the working girls sell it anonymously? When they spend the money there is tax on all their purchases!

I agree.
The idea that anyone male or female can enjoy this style of work and are doing it of their own free will is simply not a consideration by the powers that be.
Of course those that are forced into it against their require protection, and the workers require protection against abusive clients.
What is needed is prostitution to be legalised, along with licensed and professionally run establishments as a safe place for both genuine workers and clients.
Then the seedier side of girls working in flats among residents and on the streets can be clamped down on.
Local to me a pole dancing venue has tried to set up. In the end the owner of the first venue did not want it used for that purpose, I suspect he/they was/were put under great pressure from the council, chamber of trade etc. Now another venue has been found in a location that is not residential and in a building currently vacant, decaying and becoming an eyseore. No doubt many hours of council time will be spent working out 101 reasons why it must not be allowed when much more urgent items get sidetracked. Since it is on a main road I agree the outside signs and decor should give little indication of what goes on inside but beyond that what is the problem?

Because it wouldn't be fair on people in other professions, that's why, Mike. Why should the plumber pay taxes twice and the prostitute only once?

What about homosexual prostitution and those gay people who wish to purchase it?
