I hope they decide to stop I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue now as it won't be the same ever again. Humph was a legend.

There are enough episodes on tape from the last 36 years for re-runs, including classics with the late great Willie Rushden, to keep any fan satisfied without diluting the formula with a replacement chairman.

For Flat_Eric and others who have no idea what we are talking about .

Humphrey Lyttelton, jazz trumpeter, broadcaster, writer etc died today aged 86.

For the last 30 years or so he has been host of a comedy quiz show on Radio 4 called Im Sorry I Haven't a Clue (ISIHAC).

This show was called the "antidote to panel games" and started as a piss take of all the other quiz shows on Radio 4.

The panel were Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke Taylor, Graeme Garden, Willie Rushton before he died, and various other comedians.

It consisted of the panel being asked by Humph to do totally stupid thing (sing the words of one song to the tune of another and so on) and has become cult listening for many people.

Humph obvioulsy enjoyed doing it, but presented it in a style that made it seem he hated it and he could not wait for it to finish. He had wonderful timing and delivered many put downs to the town the show was coming from and the members of the panel.

To get a flavor of the show listen to some of the clips here, particulalry the clips where Humph introduces the towns of Northampton and Nottingham, very funny (and sometime quite rude).

One of the "games" played on ISIHAC was called Mornington Crescent (the name of a London underground station).

This game had absolutely no rules at all, and just consisted of the team members saying London Underground station names one after the other (Oxford St, Piccadily, Ruislip etc) until one of them said Mornington Crescent and "won" the game.

But they made out there were all sorts of rules and that it was very difficult to play (rather like Chess with its various opening moves and gambits).

Listeners at home wrote in saying they could not understand how to play it so a book of fake "rules" was written and so on.

Humph would always say that a Mrs Trellis had written in asking for explanation of the rules, or some other mindless question (often about a totally different radio program)

You can hear Humph introducing Mornington Crescent here:
