Far too arrogant to believe the American public could vote for a black candidate instead of a mediocre senator/estranged wife of a mediocre president........

Politics doesnt work like that.Theres still the vice presidency up for grabs
She'll most likely try and use her supporters as a bargaining chip for the vice presidency

WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois sealed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation's first black president. A defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton maneuvered for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket

how does she look in the mirror every morning? Hillary Clinton was today announced as the winner of the World Straw Clutching competition, for her performance in the Democratic nomination elections.

Head of the WSC, Jed Burns (a former Big Brother contestant turned model/actor), said 'We are impressed with the way she has handled herself. Without any sense of personal dignity or any actual evidence she has clung to the vain idea that she will actually win the nomination. She has had no hesitation in changing the rules of the game to make it seem like she is ahead and has used weasel words to present herself to the Amercian public as a serious contender. All of us here at WSC are in awe.'

Hillary Clinton was delighted - "I won? I won something? Does the black guy still get in? Where's my pant suit? I need to make an empty speech to re-inflate my ego. Bill put her down"

What STAGGERS me is that this is NOT the election for President, but an election for who will stand in the election for president.

This has been going on for about 9 months, and I read recently that Hilary Clinton has spent over 150 mllion dollars on her campaign.

I assume the other guy has spent the same, and the other failed candidates probably spent a few million each as well.

That means the total campaign (for all candidates) could have cost about 300 or 400 milion dollars.

Surely that is obscene !

An election for leader of a political party in this country takes only a few weeks and probably costs peanuts.

Why do the Americans have to make this such a long and expensive process.

(And they seem to finish up with some pretty bad presidents anyway)

I applaud the American system...the worthies put themselves forward and gradually get reduced down..democracy at work...meanwhile we are led by a bit of cardboard who makes John Major seem a quarter decent....still cant believe he dipped into Edwina BTW but thats another story...

And it doesn't bother you that the candidates end up spending obscene amounts of cash and owe rich companies and individuals a huge debt that they are expected to pay back in kind once in office?

As Guilbert says, the money spent on these various campaigns is quite staggering---and most is spent on media buys, telemarketing staff, lawyers and consultants. In order to have your say on who is selected as the presidential hopeful, you have to be a registered member of one of the two main parties---so much for the secret ballot. Party members choose the candidates, then the country gets to choose who stands for the top job. Basically, it's the same system as here---but more expensive and shallow.

raised & spent amounts for Clinton

A country where the only ones who can rise to the top are the ones with the money to keep their advertising blitz going isn't a Democracy

I bet you very few could tell you in detail what each candidate really stands for and thats jst hopw the spin doctors want us so we vote for the person we most like and not on the substance.

Australian Republic...hopefully not in my lifetime

Now all I need do is work on not changing my mind mid sentence
when typing ;-)

Its quite a choice the people have fo President a lawyer/politician,lawyer/politician
or a war veteran/politician

Obama might not be a Washington insider but he's already a Politician

Easy to see why apathy creeps into a system where voting isn't compulory
