I read recently that more women in Britain own dildo's and vibrators than own cars or washing machines. So most of the female population then. That is an incredible statistic! Do you think more women are content to just do it themselves, or do you think they are having more difficulty finding a man these days? Something must have occured to make more women buy and use these things than ever before.

Ann Summers have their factories outside a certain town in Sussex and I used to know someone who worked there (genuinely). I have relatives in that region and this person worked in the dildo factory, setting all the moulds, and so on. In the staff room where you sat and ate your lunch you were surrounded by hundreds of dildos and vibrators in their boxes. Not your run of the mill job!

Max, you have to question how the statistic was compiled. If the definition of sex toy was so broad to include cucumbers and hairbrushes etc this would explain why there is such a high rate of ownership.

I don't know the stats here in the U.S. but I've read that quite a few women who are single anyway own some type of toy and there's more who won't admit to owning any let alone masturbate. I've had one or two women tell me they'd rather have the real thing.

The statistic was in The Metro newspaper and I also read it in various souces online. People always say 'dont believe what you read in the newspapers' but it sounds like a reliable statistic. The fact they have factories making these things and hundreds of shops nationwide that sell them and do a good business would confirm they do massive sales. I dont see factories all round the country making Grandfather Clocks or left-handed pastry forks - lets alone loads of shops selling them! The existance of the factories and the shops confirms MASSIVE sales! Otherwise why is there need, and justification to employ so many people, in these places? They clearly do a roaring trade!

If there are so many factories working flat-out to produce dildos and a big demand for them does this suggest that a) the product is unreliable so it needs to be replaced fairly frequently, or b) the dildos are being worn-out though over use ?

We're all familiar with the power surge on the national grid when there's a commercial break during a soap cliffhanger. It's different with dildos because they're battery rather than mains operated, but the picture you're painting is of a kind of battery propelled power surge at certain times in the day, be that elevenses, mid afternoon or evening. It's an interesting proposition and one worthy of more research.
