Fujitsu and NEC seem to be well built and more durable than some which is why education authorities supply them to their staff.
Recent HP's seem less robust than several years ago.

Avoid budget and 'own brand' ones, it is only by making cheaper keyboards, flimsier cases, fitting low capacity batteries assembled with lower grade cells etc. that they can be cheaper for the same specification / offer a better headline specification for the same price compared to a e.g. a Fujitsu.

If you're looking for the best prices, this would be a good place to start:

Otherwise, eBuyer are usually pretty competitive.

I've been looking at laptops recently and have come to the conclusion they're all overpriced for what they are. There is a cartel operating to keep the price for half decent entry level laptops over ?400 - you can get cheaper, but they're lacking in ram, disc space, crap processors etc. Anything I've seen I would actually want seems to be more in the region of ?600 - and I'm not paying that for a laptop I wouldn't use too often.

Don't blame you.Just getting rid of this crappy desktop and desk and monitor is a bonus for me space-wise etc.Left with a printer,a wireless router and a laptop of some decent standard which is ok for my needs to use from room to if needs be will do.

is only ?292 - but it's a poor spec, 1GB Ram and Vista Basic - personally I wouldn't touch one without Vista Premium and 2GB Ram (preferably 3GB)

Samsung NC-10

Yes its a netbook with a 10" screen but that Atom processor is fucking fantastic. I currently triple boot mine with XP, OpenSuse and Windows 7. It plays quite comfortably 720p and 1080p HD video (1080p at upto 8Mbps above that it plays but with some stutter) with no modifications, 160Gb HDD, 6.5 hour battery life. It just does what you want it to without any bother and boots from cold to usable in 30 seconds.

Don't let anybody tell you that 1Gb RAM and a 1.6 Ghz processor is low spec.

Avoid Vista like the plague. Get XP and upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out, possibly later this year (November is the current rumour). Windows 7 is what Vista ought to have been so getting Vista now is a waste of time.

If you get the NC-10 it more than likely will come with XP.

As Jacques says, the atom processor and 1gig of ram is good spec if you're just gonna use it for internet use, listening to music and watching streamed/downloaded video, but Vista is a hog and might slow it down.

It's not got a dvd-rom remember so get yourself an external one that plugs in via usb if you need it to read disks. You can't go wrong for just over ?300.
