Pop Goes The Sixties

Post by dynatech »

On Yesterday (Sky channel 537) now, and repeated at 9pm and 7am in the morning. Well worth watching, recording and/or Sky+ing, it's a pretty well-rounded celebration of 60's pop originally broadcast on New Years Eve 1969 (7 weeks after BBC1 first went Colour).
A joint venture between the BBC & German ZDF (hence it's survival when all but 3 60's TOTP were junked by the ever-visionary Beeb) recorded in the Top Of The Pops studio's and presented by a 'top-of-his-game' Jimmy Savile & a german lady called Alfe

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

The BBC kept very little of anything from the 60s. Staff often took tapes home with them, although some of these got recovered from time to time.

I have a great clip of The Who performing I Can See For Miles from this programme.

It was mainly to do with the power of the closed shop Equity union, who had such a great deal on repeat fees that it would cost more to show something again than it would to make something new. They therefore so no point in keeping material that was never going to be re-broadcast.
We have need of you again, great king.
