We will all, one day, work for Tesco !

Just been listening to a Yvette Cooper, AKA Mrs Ed Balls, on the radio. She was upbeat about the housing market......god knows why... first time buyers are still priced out of the market........she was upbeat about the banking sector...god knows why, the UK tax payer owns most of them.

BUT she was the most upbeat about the new jobs, 11,000 being created by Tesco, ...........when asked is it good that "trades people" are being replacedby shop assistants and shelf stackers ? All she could say was that is 11,000 jobs being created and we should ALL be happy with that good news.

Is it good medium/long term for the country to have us all working for the supermarkets ???

Unfortunately this is how the politics of all sides works and it is the thing I hate most about it.

Figures will show 11,000 new jobs, not what they are, how much is paid in comparison etc. just 11,000 jobs which if you look at that number is something to be upbeat about through their eyes.

The thing about the supermarkets (it's not just Tesco) is that most are being built on land that was once used for industry, land that when used has basically been lost forever.

The trouble is there isn't any real solution to it. Business fucks off to places like India for profit and did so long before recession or there was excuse, others see what they are doing and instead of filling the vacant lots do the same.

Tesco etc are then seen as wonderful ways to regenerate the vacant areas and things will only get worse when they start venturing onto land that would be used to build houses.

The other thing about supermarkets is that when built it usually comes at a huge consequence to small businesses in competition with them which returns ghost / Tesco towns.

Competition allows Tesco's etc to put in store chemists etc which shouldn't be allowed but it's a price that is seen as acceptable.

I appreciate you've quoted Yvette Cooper (hardly a surprise if I am honest) but our Tory council granted planning permission here for Tesco and we now have at least 10 empty shops on the main shopping high street and it was something they were told would happen if it went ahead.

They now want to spend millions on regeneration to solve the consequence of regeneration by Tesco but nobody is coming because they can't compete - with Tesco.

Apparently we can't do anything about business leaving it's called protectionism and we can't do anything about competition either for the same reasons.

We were once called an island of shopkeepers by a certain prick from Europe the way things are going I think we won't even achieve the shop keeping role.

Anyone else tired of snuggling up to this type of business?

To be fair, the previous government basically told manufacturing business they were no longer needed when they decided everyone was going to make their living selling each other insurance policies and hamburgers. We were going to become a financial services based country, which worked out quite well.

It could be argued that Tescos and other large supermarkets took away all of Woolworths business, so how many people lost their jobs when Woolworth closed.

More than 11,000 I bet.

(Not "blaming" Tescos for making Woolworths close, it was up to Woolworths to move with the times and they just didn't and they lost their customer base).

A lot of these 11,000 jobs will only be part time or temporary jobs for school leavers the days are long gone when you could expect to have a job for life !sad!

All of those jobs will be taken by foreigners moving to the UK.

I think it will be far more than 11,000 jobs being lost in small business.

Most of those lost here had at least 4 people in them working and that's not counting the owners and I would imagine there will also be consequence to the staff at there suppliers as well.

The job centre are also pushing those unemployed now into Tesco's so those becoming unemployed because of their growth have nowhere to go.

Tesco's etc win at every hand.

Competition goes, they get the plaudits for generating jobs and or regenerating areas and if they don't get planning permission to build they can blame others and the consequence.

The worse thing is we know they are causing a massive problem but most of us still use them.

I have an Aldi near me which I use now and again.

Quality of the food is excellent and the price very attractive.

Not such a good choice as the big supermarkts, but fine for basics (and a bit more).

Fruit and veg lot cheaper than the big supermarkets.

If you can get past the brand names Aldi is good for shoppers.

That said they too can still take up space once used for industry and because of their low prices can also affect small business.
