HD Canon Camcorder for Amateur film

Does anyone have any experience of shooting a model with a HD camcorder such as Canon Camcorder or do you need the top end range of Canon's HD camcorders. My concern in obtaining a camcorder to do such a project is lighting conditions and sound which will not, I think, be to the standard of the higher pro models,but they have to be of a good should i say 'high' quality as they are being marketed as 'High Definition'.
