If only this had been done since day 1.
I've always said they know exactly who these people are, where to find them and that the Muslim community are the ones best placed to deal with them.

I'm unsure about this. While I don't agree with these peoples' stance on the soldiers I also don't agree that another group of people can force them off the streets while the police just watch mob rule in action. Both groups have a right to protest but none have the right to deny the other that right.
It also worries me why the police sat back and let it happen but think I know why. Sometimes the police are reluctant to interfere with issues solely confined within an ethnic community. I've seen that first hand on numerous occasions.

I completely under your view Sam.
However the simple truth is that their are members of the Muslim community who know who the extremists are who are sitting back and doing nothing.
I am not surprised that it has taken them getting grief for them to turn around and give grief to those who are responsible, it's just a pity more from their community don't do it.
The point about the Police is a good one and it does raise concern but when you see the reaction of the media and others when they do attempt to do almost anything it's little wonder that they have sat back and let those who can deal with the issue get on with it, especially if it is effective.
If it had turned to violence they would have stepped in but letting the community sort itself out in this way for me is good proactive policing.

Well, it seems that the scuffles broke out before the police arrived so I was wrong in assuming the police let a mob get away with forcing a group off the streets, physically.
I'm still apprehensive about the police's stance on letting one group force another from expressing their right to protest and be critical of something in this country, as long as they weren't inciting murder/violence. I want to know how this group forced the extremists off the streets without doing so physically. Were there threats of violent recriminations? Was it good policing or just easier policing?

These days I'm not sure whose country this is at all!
It certainly doesn't resemble anything I would happily admit ownership of.

I think it was good policing in terms of community.
An after thought however has to be that if the extremists were giving out extremist material why didn't the concerned members of the community who dealt with the issue report them to the Police.
They could have arrested those responsible and those arrests could have led to obtaining intelligence on others.
So it was, as it usually is with the Muslim community, a case of them just looking after themselves.
