How weird are these ads on the TV? I dont know how much freephone numbers cost the receiver but to be on the phone for many minutes while you set up your direct debit and answer tons of questions, that will probably take care of your first three months of donations. And that is before you consider the huge costs of running the adverts. It is bizarre and dishonest for most of the donations to only cover the costs of trying to generate those donations. I don't know how these organisations get away with it.

As I said the first few months' donations by an individual probably get gobbled up by the cost of the call to the charity. If they have many doners then quite a bit of the ?2.00 a month they all donate will get swallowed up by the cost of the TV ads, even if the charity does get a reduced rate. When you also consider that these ad's aren't just on some unwatched channel, like UK Living, they are also on ITV, C4, and 5, then I would imagine the cause gets very little of what is actually given.

'probably' and 'imagine' in that context really mean 'almost certainly'. I would imagine it costs this much, or it probably costs that much translates as 'it is very likely to' or 'almost certainly does'. There is no doubt that these 0800 numbers cost a reasonable amount to the receiver, and as the donation is only 2 quid a month then quite a lot will go just to cover the long call you will have to make to set up your direct debit and to give all your details. Then there is the cost of the advert like I said. It is extremely likely that only a small amount of the donation you give goes to the cause.

where admin. costs no more than 10% of the received donations.
